When I was at Busch Gardens in Tampa (winter 2008), I saw a "lovely" model yard with a manicured lawn with flower and plant beds and meticulously groomed sand (visible to the left). Signs planted around the various beds spoke in glowing terms of the "backyard habitat." One sign, depicted here, refered people to a web page where one can find directions on how to create an animal habitat in one's own heavily groomed, mowed backyard.
