This is the bedroom of Mrs. Ritmontree, Jariya's foster mother, as it existed in November 2001. Jariya called her Yai (the Thai word for maternal grandmother).
There's a crib here. And Jariya napped in it. But at night she slept with Mrs. Ritmontree, who loved Jariya so much that when she saw her again almost exactly six years later (in 2007), all she wanted to do was hold and hug her.
We still send Mrs. Ritmontree letters and pictures. She took exceptional care of Jariya. She has a lot of love in her heart, I think.
Mrs. Ritmontree had a refridgerator and a television. Her son was in the military (and may still be). She lives with him and her daughter in law in military housing. I am told that they were basically middle class Thais, but what it means to be middle class in Thailand is a moving target, given the rate of economic growth there in recent years.
