This archive contains three files: 1) a summary of my dissertation on
Tiberian Hebrew pausal forms, 2) a printer-ready (Hewlett-Packard
LaserJet HPGL) copy of the dissertation, and 3) a PDF version of the
dissertation with cruft introduced by the PDF converter. Although the
dissertation itself is fairly technical, its introduction is meant for
general consumption, and makes some radical (and I hope interesting)
suggestions about how biblical Hebrew was actually pronounced. The
introduction is about twenty pages long, and everything in it is
translated. I would suggest handing it out to students when they hit
their first pausal form :-). Part 1 also contains a chart that
depicts all of the main pausal alternation classes as a set of model
forms that can be easily remembered. This can be used as a kind of
quick reference chart, and again might prove helpful when teaching,
say, a first or second-year Hebrew class.
The printer-ready copy of the dissertation must be output in binary
form to a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III or IV printer. It doesn't
matter whether the unit has the PostScript hardware option installed
or not. If it is set up correctly, the printer should sense that this
is not a PostScript file, and adjust accordingly. See your site
administrator if there is a problem. Under UNIX, not all printer
daemons will handle this file correctly, so check with the authorities
on site before attempting to print. Make sure that the daemon can
handle raw printer codes.
Those of you running old Windows machines with an HP LaserJet III or
IV hooked up as LPT1 can print this file manually from a DOS window
simply by typing "copy /b D:thpforms.lj4 LPT1" (where D: is the drive
or directory in which this archive resides, and where LPT1 is printer
port 1).
